Hey Forum-ites:
Ahhh, DAMN those mid-70s emission-conscience smog-heads that choked performance out of our beloved Vettes. I'm on a mini-mission to reduce some of these restrictions from my '76. I'm conscious of keeping it relatively stock...yet...my hypocrisy only extends so far. I want to clean-up the engine compartment from some of those confounding tubes and crude reguritated air-return efforts that restrict our Lady of Blessed Acceleration (for you Blues Brothers fans..). I submit a picture of my nearly present engine and another of the open EGR region where that Space Invader-looking thing once resided. Here's today's question to my Forum Bro's: Where can I optain a place to screw down unto this crevasse- an EGR Plate, if you will. My Googling has come up empty and this would be one more annoying tube I could eliminate.
You do know that the egr and most of the other smog devices are NOT the problem and that removing them is only going to net you a couple ponies? You would get more with a super tune.
The issue is restrictive heads, exhaust and maybe intake depending on what you have, that looks like a cast iron unit.
You could install an Edlebrock 2101 intake that accepts an EGR, better heads, better cam and better exhaust, stay green and legal AND get that kick in the pants your lookin for
I'm told the plate does, in fact, exist....I'm not looking to pump up the ponies as much as I'm attempting to clean-up the engine visual by eliminating some of the tubing. I realize just whats entailed to spin the tires with gusto- aluminum heads, a juicy cam, etc. Maybe later...now I would like to enhance the appeal by reducing some of those crappy vacuum tubes. Perhaps nothing can be done, but what's the harm in tossing the topic to the masses....
Its your vette, so try the plate. But I doubt you'll see any improvement with your current engine. If you really want some power, then take the time to research- read John Lingenfelter's On Modifying Chevy Small Block Engines- its the bible. I think you'll find, that if you want a good street car, not a drag car, that you'll need, at a minimum, new heads, a "mild" cam and a better exhaust. Pulling off smog equipment may clean up the engine bay, but yer not gonna be burnin up the tires.
EGR Block-off!! Outstanding. Thanks once again to my fellow Forum-ites and our continuing efforts to thrwart emission villianry and free our C3s from vacuum hell!
