Default Saga continues, 73 Bumper

Here are some pics of the replacement of the front bumper cover on my 73. The cover is still at the bodyshop getting painted. I still have some work to do before I install it.[IMG][IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG][/IMG]

Nice, it looks like it it's a good fit. Did it require much massaging to get it to fit like that? Whose bumper is it?

It is a OEM GM cover. Got it from GM parts direct. Yes it fit good right out of the box. Little pricey, but worth it I think. My only problem is, the old cover was painted on the car when it was painted in 82. I think I should paint the mounting flange area even though it didn't show during the fitting stage. I have a little work to do before I bolt it on anyway. I should have the cover back this week.

Looks great. You were very lucky to get all the retainers off intact.
I think on my 75 front bumper ... maybe one or two studs survived.

I have owned the car since 84. During that time it hasn't been out much, so rust wasn't a problem. I sprayed everything with PB Blaster before I started taking things apart. The retainers were in great shape overall. I just cleaned them up a bit, painted them and plan on using them over. I plan on using new washered nuts on the installation.

You lucked out on the fit. Makes me think I should have used original GM as I went fiberglass and had to work it quite a bit for good fit. Good to know for the future. I have this sinking feeling that I will be revisiting this part of my car at some point due to some brainless driver kissing my front bumper and turning my fiberglass into junk.

Believe me, I mulled this over quite a bit before I acted. I lived with the first crack quite awhile before I did anything. I think a lot of the guys that used covers other than the OEM, eliminated the bumper bar to get rid of some weight. That parking lot bump thing scares me a bit also.

I agree with you on painting the mounting flange. That is what I did on my '73. I bought a spray can of touch up paint and the color matched great.

That sounds like good advice I bought a can of Duplicolor touch up paint to paint the various hardware pieces. I think I will use that to paint the mounting flange.
