I have the original 427, 390 HP and M21 trans from my 1968 and I am debating whether or not I should keep it or sell it. I have a replacement engine so this one will likely sit in my garage for a long time until I can get around to re-building it, if ever.
What would a relatively stock 427 with trans be worth? It has had the heads re-done and an aftermarket distributor. It was running when I started working on my Vette but it idled like crap but ran strong. Trans was in good shape, quiet at speed and doesnt pop out of gear.
I don't know the market value of the engine and trans but I'd bet it's worth a hell of a lot more sitting in your garage if should you ever decide to sell the car.
If you don't need the money I would certainly keep it so you have the original #s matching components.
Profile says 1968 Coupe
New SR III Tube Frame, all aluminum 572, tremec 5 speed. so it may not be worth it to hang on to it as the car is far from original

I was typing while you wrote this, and that does change things a bit.
But, I'd still keep the drivetrain with the car unless I was desperate for cash.
I would keep it for two reasons. 1) because its a 68 #'s matching & 2) because its a 427 motor & trans. That motor alone is worth keeping. someday you may want to rebuild it even to put it into another vette. I wish I had a 427 w/a 4sp to play with in my garage.
