Default Opinions Please?

I have the original 427, 390 HP and M21 trans from my 1968 and I am debating whether or not I should keep it or sell it. I have a replacement engine so this one will likely sit in my garage for a long time until I can get around to re-building it, if ever.

What would a relatively stock 427 with trans be worth? It has had the heads re-done and an aftermarket distributor. It was running when I started working on my Vette but it idled like crap but ran strong. Trans was in good shape, quiet at speed and doesnt pop out of gear.

Thanks!

Andrew

I don't know the market value of the engine and trans but I'd bet it's worth a hell of a lot more sitting in your garage if should you ever decide to sell the car.

If you don't need the money I would certainly keep it so you have the original #s matching components.

Provided I had the '68 to go with them.

Profile says 1968 Coupe
New SR III Tube Frame, all aluminum 572, tremec 5 speed. so it may not be worth it to hang on to it as the car is far from original

Your getting good advise.

Check any of the price guides and you will see all vintage cars are worth much more when they have their original drivetrains.

I was typing while you wrote this, and that does change things a bit.

But, I'd still keep the drivetrain with the car unless I was desperate for cash.

I would keep it for two reasons. 1) because its a 68 #'s matching & 2) because its a 427 motor & trans. That motor alone is worth keeping. someday you may want to rebuild it even to put it into another vette. I wish I had a 427 w/a 4sp to play with in my garage.

Thanks for the opinions guys Guess I will hang onto it despite the fact that I got rid of the original chassis and rest of the drive train.

I think I might use it to make one of these...

Yes this really is a 454 snowblower. Check it out at v8snowblowers.com

I might have stayed in Canada if I had one of these puppies. NAW I don't think so!

But since I don't get any snow here maybe I will turn it into a lawn mower instead.

I would keep it, and who knows maybe you could find another 68 to drop that combo in.

Now if you had tix to CES in Tokoyo we could seriously talk

Wow! $6K + for a rebuilt unit. Interesting. But I am gonna keep mine. Who knows what it will end up in.

Thanks again all!
