Before I go tearing things apart I ask your expertise. Maybe someone has had this problem and can point me to the quickest troubleshooting, starting point. Tailights work at night, though when I step on the brake, the left brake light goes completly black. Maybe a brake switch? Thanks in advance!

I would think bad socket. Sounds like that socket is grounding out when you send current to the brake light on that side. If the terminals in the socket are touching, and you press the brake, the short would cause that light to black out.
Start at the socket. Inspect, test with a multi meter, and replace if you have to.
Sounds like a ground problem.
I had a similar problem like that and had to run a new ground to the housing.
Also, having a bulb in backwards can make things funky too.
I had a different problem last month. Had brake lights (but dim) and no taillights. Both lights sockets had bad grouding connections in the sockets. Replaced both sockets -- back to normal.
