How much end play do you have? Are are they coming all the way out? As you see in this pic, they are held in the posi unit by snap rings. The pic is of a '70 tuned posi.

Here is a post on a full rebuild.

No they are not supposed to come out or move at all. Maybe a few thousandths of an inch but that is it. Read the above link and that will explain a lot. GTR1999 is the diff man and can answer all your questions on diff rebuilds.

The end play of the yokes in the above pic is .005 on the left and .007 on the right.

If the yolks pull out of your diff either the retaining rings are missing for some reason or you have a bonehead rebuild like mine.

Well, spent most of the summer putting in new engine, 700r4 tramsmission, side exhuast system, shocks, u-joints drive shaft, paint job, tires, and a little glitter under the hood.

Well, looks like it is a new mono spring, differential, half shafts, Plus something else??????

Question: Would you trust WHO to buy a rebuilt differential from??????

I did all the above by myself and some days were 125 + out side , worked mostly evenings and eariler mornings. at 64 I think I'll hand this next quest to a shop,, I'm a little worn down,

Thanks to all,

Yeah...You are at least going to have to remove the rear cover and see what is going on in there. I don't nessasarilly see the need fo a new spring, diff or half shafts though.
Good Luck,
Mark

I can't say who I would trust since I decided not to take a chance. My car is numbers matching and I wasn't going to buy a rebuild or send it out to a shop. I did get some quotes and discussed the situation with a very knowledgeable guy. I decided to have GTR1999 build my posi unit(in the pic) and I rebuilt the rest of the differential. I am very satisified with my decision.

PM me if you want more info on the quotes or any other info on my rebuild.

If your stub axles fall out of the differential then your snap rings are IN your differential. They weill get chewed up eventually and the particles will cause your bearings to fail. If your still looking for a rebuil take a look at our prices, they are the best out there. www.duntovmotors.com The turn around is one week.

For the amount of work you have done read all of GRT1999 post. If you understand it all its not that bad to do yourself.
I just did mine with Grt's instructions and he was great with excepting phone calls for assistance, never put on hold.
Save me a good chunk O $$$.
PM me for more info.
Thanks Grt.
Michael.

Default worn stub shafts

I have had this problem with my 79,L 82,4 speed I am the original owner. The stub shafts were worn out and came to light when a getting a rear end alignment. The shaft ends wore down enough to let the retainer snap rings fall off.Due to the worn condition of shafts they had an excessive end play and there was not any indication noise wise of a problem in progress! At any rate I replaced them with a new set I purchased at the NCRS meet in Orlando two years ago.All of the major suppliers handle them from reconditioned to new ones that are stronger then OEM.As I said this was my problem, everthing else in my rear end was okay,I guess I was lucky.Later Gene
