I am in the process of painting my 78. How do you remove the headlight assemblies?

disconnect rubber hoses and electrics. 4 bolts hold the headlight assemblies to the hood surround. They can be reaced from underneath the vehicle.

The AIM will help considerably.

I undid the 4 bolts from the hood surround. The lights are currently popped up, and I didn't see how the assembly comes out.
I have the AIM, and I am ebarrassed to say I didn't look in there. :o

The AIM is useless for doing or showing any kind of mechanical work, it is only good for part breakdown. To do most things, like install the hood release cable, you do by experience, the AIM won't tell you that to get to the bolts you practically have to remove the whole interior, among several things, it just shows the breakdown of parts.
I am waiting for the headlamp answer also, I have to remove them from my 69 and was going to do it with them in the up position (assuming that is the only way to get at the bolts that hold it in!!!! WAITING>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.B

Once you remove the vacuum lines and take out the 4 bolts they will come right out.

Some people said you could take them out through the top. I tried for quite a while and could not get them out.

I ended up getting them out from behind and past the radiator, after putting some cardboard in front of the rad so as not to damage..

I removed my grille and the headlight assembly came out through the front. That was on my 69 and the easiest way I found to remove them.

I just removed mine this past weekend (1981)
There are 5 bolts - 3 on top (closest to hood) 2 on bottom (near bumper)

Headlights in closed position, removed vacuum lines and outer (larger) springs ~ that may just have been my scenario though as they were fixed in the up position

Good info, i need to take the headlights out of my 81 also in the very near future. So let me get this right, the only bolts you need to take out are the ones that mount the headlight support brackets?

In my case, yes. I fear I failed to mention that my hood isn't on the car right now due to the current project it has going on. I don't think I could have gotten them out if it was on.

Be careful...I removed mine and broke one of the mounting holes. Mine, a 78, appears to be made of cast aluminum. One bolt was on so tight, and apparently stuck, that when I broke the bollt loose, half of the mounting hole cracked and seperated. I think they can be welded back together, but I found one on eBay for a steal.
