This morning it was working fine, this afternoon - dead. The drivers side window won't go down, passenger side works just fine. When I hit the button in either direction the lights get a little dimmer, so something is drawing power, but there is no movement and no sound.
Simple circuit. Take the side panel off the center console (not sure of your year) and jumper across the switch. If the window moves, you found the problem, if not, it's either wiring/connector or the motor.
The wires go thru the door jamb and are subject to much bending. That is a likely place to find a broken wire. The test that Duke mentioned is perfect it will tell you if it is the wire or the motor. Hope it is the wire as it is much easier repair than the motor not to mention cheaper.
Thanks Duke! This is kind of weird now, I tried your test and it worked - and then the switch worked on its own too and now the window seems fine. There weren't any loose wires that I could see, so I suspect maybe they're "going bad" but not 100% bad yet? Would that explain why the lights got dimmer when I hit it, even though there was no sound or window movement? Maybe I should just go ahead and order two new ones and replace them both - with my luck next time it gets stuck it will be in the DOWN position before a rainstorm.
Quick question on the window motor....
Are they grounded thru the door?
They have two electrical connection pins that are wired to the switch.
Do I need to ground the motor to the door to tes??

Motor wire
GM had a problem where the armature winding inside the case would touch or arc to the case. The motor stopped working. If you take the end cap off the motor, you can see the terminations just at the edge of the case.
