Hello,
Is there any member in Minnesota who would be willing to check out a '72 for me? It is located in Minnetonka, which is near Edina/Minneapolis, I believe.
I will gladly pay a fee for this kindness.
From: Minnesota in the summer, Las Vegas in the winter
I am 100 miles south of Minnetonka. I am sure there are lots of C3 guys in the metro area that will be willing to help. Did you post this in the Great Lakes regional forum?
Minnetonka is west of Minneapolis and we live just north of the Twin Cities. The Twin Cities isn't very big, so I can swing out there to check a car out for you. Our oldest son works in Minnetonka and our daughter and her husband live out that way too.
I don't know the details and nuances of '72s, but if other CF members who know lots about '72s could tell me some unique things to look for on a '72, I could look the car over for you.
Nothing out of the ordinary to check on a 72. Frame (especially the trans crossmember and trailing arm pocket area) and birdcage. Look into the pockets for the body mounts in the front kickpanels and in front of the rear wheels for scale buildup. Scale in the front most likely came from above. The floors are fiberglass but check for moisture under the carpet that might indicate a bad water leak. If there are no leaks you have found the only Vette ever made that doesn't leak.
Make sure there are no radiator leaks also. 72 base engines had an aluminum radiator and if it has been sitting for a while the antifreeze has probably rotted it. Original replacements are big $ and even the Dewitt's replacements, while worth the $, are expensive.
