I'm putting duel exaust on my 1980. Where can I find a bolt on crossmember with two cutouts ?
You don't need a new cross member to put dual exhaust on your '80. I made a very simple modification to the cross member on my '80 and ended up with an EXCELLENT true dual exhaust system that improved performance noticeably on my butt-o-meter.
Hi Burnt,
I just started modifying my crossmember this week. Have it disected and welded back together. All that is left is to make up the bottom brackets. Work is interfereing with my freetime, damnit! I am running 2.50" pipe with a crossover, and will be able to unbolt the entire system from headers back, in one peice. It seems like a worthwhile modification, and if you have basic wrench skills, is a pretty simple modification. I have documented the procedure with photos, but don't have ability to put them on forum. If you e-mail me, I can send some to you, as an attachment.

I've got duals with no crossover. A set of cats (whose days are very numbered) and monza tips. What are the advantages of a crossover and are there any real advantages with x-pipe etc. crossovers?

My opinion is there are advantages that make it worth adding. The sound is somewhat more mellow with adding a crossover. You may experience an increase in torque below the torque peak with a crossover. I think the effects may be more pronounced on a car that has already maxed out the exhaust system and then have a crossover added - but that is not something I can back up with a dyno. If you had more than enough exhaust system in the first place the added torque will be less IMHO. Part of the reason the crossover works is because the engine now has 2 pipes to exhale out of rather than just one for every exhaust pulse but again, my opinion. They do work.
The X-pipe probably works the best but I have not tried one. I do know that some professionals use them so they do work better.
I put duals on my 81 and I didn't have to change the crossmember. I got MidAmerica's system. It took a while to get it fitted up right and get it all aligned, but it's tucked right up against the crossmember and no problems there. It's 2 1/2", and I've compared the ground clearance to my dad's 69 with factory exhaust, and the difference is negligible. I've only scraped it on the ground once, but that was my fault. You'll hit the spoiler up front before the exhaust.
Whether you use OTS like the ones from Mid America or modify the cross member and go near-straight back on the left depends on the headers. If you keep the original ram horn exhaust manifolds, then the OTS pipes are the easiest to put on.
I have full-length headers on my '80. In order to get the left pipe to the right side of the car like original, the left pipe would have needed a 90 deg. bend just behind the collector. Sharp bends are bad for flow.
IMO, if you're converting to true dual exhaust, you should go all the way and put full length ceramic headers on also to get the most flow improvement.
