Default steering wheel swap

What is involved in putting a new steering wheel in?

i have a 75 and well, it just seems too big! when i get in, its just a pain in the butt...

is it a "plug n play" kind of thing? does any steering wheel work?

what should one cost me?

You will want a Corvette specific after market wheel for ease of install. If it's a universal you need an adapter kit and that usually looks trashy.

Many of the main vendors carry Corvette specific wheels but they do not come cheap. I paid a lot of money for my simple four spoke.

A Corvette specific wheel will be remove screws, install new on existing hub. It would also work with your telescoping function if you have it. Universal wheels replace the hub and you lose tele.

I installed a Grant 791 which is a direct bolt on for the corvette, its has a diameter of 14 inches and is flatter than the stock wheel. I purchased it from Jegs.

I installed mahogany(look alike) steering wheel.
You just need to be careful not to break the horn cap when you take it off.

You need to pry it off. I inserted screw driver into between horn button and retainer, and pried off the button. If you do it carefully, you won't break it.

Oh, you had better disconneted the battery so that you won't let it horn when working on it.

Stock is 15"

you could also go with a Grant Signiture wheel kit, and have a differnt choice of wheels. Install kit grant #4193 and shortening adapter hub grant #4001, and you can use any grant signiture wheel you want.

Looks like this, with the wheel I chose,, a 15" wheel, that I went with. Sizes down to 12" if you want.

But to remove your existing hub and wheel, you will need to get or borrow a steering wheel puller,, about 9 bucks. tha's all the tools you need, it's fun, really

I have to say though, that if I had known that that wheel existed, at the time I was doing the swap, I would have gone with the direct fit wheel. looks great and is the righth size too. i would go withthe ecklers wheel,, it's a grant anyway, but, if you need an even smaller wheel, the signiture adapter is the way to go. C.

(All personal experience; no warranty expressed or implied, your milage may vary, some settling may occur during shipping and it's all fun until somebody loses an eye.)

I changed to the Grant st. wh. polished slotted spokes w/ black leather a long time ago. Shallow dish moves closer to dash (great if tall). Less than 14" & direct bolt on. Ideal !

Fits 63-75 &
77-82 w/ tilt/tele.

That is the wheel I used, and I'm really happy with it. Since mine is a '76, I had to use an adaptor, but it looks fine to me.

here is mine.
I like wood like steering wheel for classic look. Downside is it becomes slippery when my hand get sweaty in hot day.
