The Corvette Museum won't have records for an 81. The only thing that might be around (and this is slim) is a copy of the Build Sheet which may or may not be glued to your gas tank. Some have found copies stuck up under the drivers seat, or in frame rails etc. You will learn of course the basics from the vin which you probably already know how to de-code. Get a copy of the "Corvette Black Book" and look up the 78 and find out exactly what options were available. That should give you a start.
thank you. theres no build sheet on the tank (had the exhaust done this week). i do have the black book but im mainly wanting to know if there is the optional rear gears and stuff like that. does the vin decode to that extent?
There should be numbers or tags on the rear end somewhere - there are ways to find out through those numbers - I guess. But the VIN will not tell you anything about what gears you have. Only the RPO codes on the build sheet would have that information.
Read this article - and look around your vehicle you may get lucky:

David: Use form below to order a copy of your dealer invoice....this is available for 77 and newer Corvettes....Rear end ratio codes(two letter code) are stamped on the bottom surface of the carrier at the mounting flange..look for the two letter prefix in the serial number...
The tank sticker on the later models isn't on the tank itself. There is a sheetmetal cover that covers the top of the tank. It unbolts from the bottom in front of the tank and on the sides of tank. Looks kinda corrugated on mine. If you unbolt it and bend it down, it takes some force to do this, you should be able to see up inside this cavity with a flashlight and the sticker should be glued there. You'll probably have to take the tire carrier/top cover out to make things easy.
Now that I think about it mine also had a build sheet folded up and lodged between the tach and speedo. Take a look there.....HTH
