Default Vin ?

The last 6 numbers are the sequence right? Well mine is 400077. I know that there were not 400,000 vettes made that year. So this means that mine was number 77 off the line right?

Not sure what year you are talking about, but that #4 on the 6th from last digit was commonly a 4 on most 70's cars. (after '73, I think)

Last 6 is not the sequence, its the last 5.

Check your assembly date, casting date, body assembly date on trim tag, etc to verify if you really have a very early car.

If it's a 78, the final serial number used in Sept 77 was 403178
If it's a 79, the final serial number used in Sept 78 was 400770

Either way, assuming 400001 was first, you have a real early build for your model year

My book said that the first vin was 400001 and the last is 440274. So this means that mine is #77 out of 40274 coupes built that year. Does that sound right?

Yes, but what pb is trying to tell you is that the last produced VIN for the 1978 model year during September, 1977, was #03178, meaning your car is a very early car, probably August.

So they stop making them after 03178 untill the first of the year.

Almost

The NCRS spec guide I have lists the last vin numbers used per calendar month

for the 1978 model year the last serial number issued in September of 1977 was 403186 (excludes 1978 pace cars)

403178 would have been used very early in October 77

Shouldn't the trim tag tell you the exact build date?

Mine is Dec. 1st 1972
