I'm trying to figure this one out. I have been rebuilding my calipers, and got down to the last one, last side, and bent two dust covers/seals. After taking a closer look, I noticed where Bubba had gone around the edge of the casting where it meets the dust boots and dimpled them with a punch.
Luckily for me I had an extra set. Got out the dremel with the small grinding wheel and the magnifying lamp and carefully ground the edge of the casting where the dimpels were back to round. Boots went in like the others, so all is cool now.
I'm wondering if Bubba thought this would keep the fluid from leaking out, not knowing these are just dust boots, or what?
It's a dangerous combo of being cheap and ingenious. And a little bit of stupid mixed in. Growing up on a farm, we bubba'd lots of things. Not so much cars though.
You can fix anything with baling wire and duct tape. My cousin had a '78 3/4 ton truck with rusted fenders. No joke, he duct taped over the rust, and spray painted it to match. Looked real good for several months actually
He was staking them in, reminds me of a repair that someone did for my Dad on an old 18 horse single cylinder Briggs and Stratten lawn tractor to the intake valve seat, but that didnt hold, it came apart and broke lotsa parts. Along those same lines , it was suggested to me by a ""friend"" to stake the new bearing on the old rear spindle (stub axle) on my previous vette when the bearing destroyed the spindle. Nope,, I waited for the new spindle to come in and fixed it properly. Peace,,,Moosie
I had forgot to mention that I bought these from one of those caliper rebuilders that put in stainless steel sleeves..won't mention who..about 10 years ago. I've had them on the car for about 8 years (two on the road, other 6 in storage) and had to rebuild them because they were leaking from between the caliper halves.
My assumption was that bubba was working for them at the time they were rebuilt, before I got them. Hopefully he has moved on somewhere, and from what I've seen here on the forum, he has quite a resume..!!
