Default Water based paint for the vette :))

Well its finally time to have it painted, its been primed and sanded and I'v chosen the final colour, I had my painter make up a chip of the original Metallic silver and I found it a bit drab, lack of intesitiy, so I chose one to my liking, Its a bit lighter, more chrome and reflective. it should look fine.
For the Canadians reading this it may be interesting, unlike our southern friends, our governement signed the Kyoto accord, this will touch all auto paint shops. Within two to three years all paint shops will have to convert to Water borne paint systems. My uncle who owns a shop locally is the first in our region to have converted, and my vette will be painted with this paint made by BASF. His painter told me after a couple months of using this stuff that he would never go back to solvent paint systems, this BASF stuff sprays on easy, covers so much better and cleans up with Water,,
I'll post pics next week when I get it back,,,

Use of water based paints on cars becomes manditory in California next year. (This is what I've read.) I talked to a body shop employee a couple of weeks ago and he said they were already using all water based paints. One thing though is that they still use, and apparently will be able to use next year, is solvent based clear coats over the water based stuff. I think he said they were using polyurethane clear over their paint.

Same here, for some reason they will still be using solvent type clearcoats ?????,, I'll have to check into the reason for this. For us (in north America) this is new, but they have been using this paint in europe for many years.

so exactly what part is water based? one could imagine the primer is not water based either if the clear isnt, and hell the color could practically be rolled on since the clear is providing the smooth finish at the end :P

In traditional paint, the color (pigment) is carried by solvent, this solvent is released in the atmosphere and makes the environmentalists very sad. In water based paints, the solvent is replaced with Water. BTW waterborne primer does exist.

im aware but spraying has only gotten far more efficient then it used to be, and the solvent is the least of anybodies worries with todays paints
