I have an 81 with the Performer RPM series intake and carb. Im looking to upgrade the cam to really open up the top end but still be roadworthy. Just wondering what kind of duration and lift numbers to look for and if I should stick to the Edelbrock setup with the cam as well? Thanks

Go with the edelbrock RPM cam!! You will not be disappointed.. The came has plenty of top end with out sacrificing any low end... Rarely do you see a car that sounds as mean and healthy as this cam, and the cams that do sound meaner don't really have any low end. If you have any questions about the cam please feel free to ask..
due to the 8.5:1 it is a good choice, if the springs meets specs.
.
with better heads it could use more cam. search archives for ideas
how did I miss that...
For some reason I thought he also had the Performer RPM heads... Otherwise, I would have never suggested the RPM cam because it would fall flat on its face with 8.5:1 and the smaller valves
Ok, ya I thought that was the case. So if not the RPM then is there any substitute? I just don't have the cash for the heads right now. Or maybe a good package for heads and cam? It would be worth the wait.
I'd wait till you get the dough together to do it the proper way. Matching heads and a cam can either bring and engine to life or shoot it dead. There's some good package deals, as well as other proven combinations. Run some searches on cam/head combos, you'll find good stuff.
