Today I went with some Corvette buds to watch the Historic cars run at the Naval Air Station in Coronado,Ca...it was not open to the public today, but my DEA bud got us in..To my surprise,I ran into Dick Guldstrand whom I first met 23 years ago...he is racing the 99 Camaro(first pic below) There were some very interesting cars...and one C3 is running this year...anyway,here are a few pics....we go back tommorow for the qualifying races..oh,I will get two short video clips up in a few minutes of the "C3" on the track...
Being this track is rather short/with turns, the Sebring 75 ran 3.90 gears....they change gears depending on track they run..this Vette still holds a record at Datona of 236 MPH....
If there is any interest in some particular pics, let me know and I'll grab some tommorrow..
A couple of pics with Dick Guldstrand....we had some neat chats about when he first was hired by Roger Penske wayyyyy back when...he has invited us to to see his shop in Burbank...plus I need some more suspension stuff...
I purchased my rear spring from him last year...he confirmed my thoughts on front springs I need up front to finish my suspension on the 69 502....
When I first met him,my old Corvette club was celebrating it's 25th anniversary.(1983 )..I invited Dick and his wife down and we got them a hotel room near the beach...He brought a new 1984 Corvette and let us "test" drive it ...Chevrolet had sent him the Vette before they were released to dealers in California..so we chatted a little about that today...
During practice (he was driving),his Camaro lost a valve spring,so his mechanics are tearing into the engine right now...what happened is someone neglected to torque some rocker nuts ...that's racing...
OT - I really love the looks of the '67/'68 Camaros. Sometimes I wish I would have bought one of those instead, and the thought of trying to trade for one has crossed my mind.
BTW, you said '99 Camaro in the first pic, but the first pic is of a '67?? Are you referring to a person, not a car?

Meant Dicks race number...on his Camaro..
I almost bought a Camaro before I got my 78 Vette...had my eyes on a 67...

Just takes the right griper
Cool story on the 84 though. Would like to hear more about that!
First..he asked us not to wreck it as he had to drive it back to Costa Mesa from San Diego...
It was strange getting used to it..big change from the C3's then, and my 78 was only 6 years old,and I had been racing it 5 years...
Anyway, all our impressions on the 84 were mixed, plus no one liked the pac man dash... But the handling was great..we gave it a good work out..
Not much else to tell except Dick had some design input with Chevrolet on the rear suspension...
Funny...I spun an 87 vert on the freeway two years ago and smacked the K rail twice...later found out the right rear ABS sensor was bad and I looped it when I got on the breaks...talk about tire smoke...
BTW,that is his Vette in the first pic above next to the Camaro...they say it hits 200 mph...

I hate you, man.
Dick is a genuine GURU. There's no reason for him to recall any of my particular projects, but he and Craig have certainly answered a lot of questions and given me some valuable advice over the years. Now if I can only afford to finish following thru...
Enjoy your visit, but please wipe that SEG off your face before you post up about your field trip to Burbank.
Here are a few more...got over to races late Saturday.....my friend totaled his 2007 C6 Z06 on the way over there......hit a guard rail avoiding another vehicle stopped...he took out 6 guard rail posts..(8"x10")...he is fine..no other vehicle involved...I was two vettes behind in the 69.....
Dick Guldstrands Camaro...Friday he sucked a valve thru the retainer...they put another engine in Saturday morning..(loaner engine from a local 72 Vette...) and it lasted about 3 laps..he told me later he was very frustrated as he came to race..he is 80 years old,btw...
Here is an unusual setup...an "electric" Cobra.....At first I thought it was a welding machine he was towing...then I heard the generator running when he pulled in...
The owner said he has to tow the generator if he goes over a certain distance....
