Where ( inside or out in engine comp. ) do you pull the heater core it?? If it's outside in the engine compartment, is it easier with the motor out?? I'm still waiting for my manual. Is it an easy job? Thanks, Tony
Do you have A/C or not? If not, you can remove the blower panel from the engine compartment and replace it that way. Motor? The blower motor? or the engine? No need to remove the engine...
It has A/C and the motor is my engine. Having the engine rebuilt so was wondering it having the engine out helps or it doesn't matter? If I can do it at a later date, it would help. Don't want to go off on tooo many different project. Thanks
It must be removed from inside the car.
Remove the passenger side dashboard panel (2 screws left, 2 screws right, 3 screws top).
Remove the sheet metal cover on the engine compartment side to gain access to the heater hoses.
Remove the heater hoses (you'll probably need to slit the hoses with a knife and access is tight).
Disconnect vacuum hoses, control cables, etc. as necessary for removing the heater box.
Remove the heater box from the firewall (they use different types of fasteners, top and bottom...on some you will need to remove nuts from the engine compartment side of the firewall - on others simply unscrew bolts from the passenger compartment side).
The rest is easy.
You'll probably want a new seal kit because the old foam seals will likely disintegrate as you remove the old core.
Good luck.
It took me about 4 hours.

Give yourself a root canal as a warm up to this project
Just kidding--be patient, go slow, and make sure to pressure test the new heater core before placing it in the car.
This may be a dumb question but what is the advantage to removing the heater core besides weight reduction? Ive heard that this can be one way to reduce excess engine heat in the cabin, once everything is sealed off... t/f?

He is probably removing it because it is leaking.
I guess maybe he should have said replacing instead of removing.
Hey, thanks guy for all the information. When I said removing, I meant relacing. The only reason for this question was that I have a leak in the freeze plug behind the motor mount. It was probibly leaking when the last owner had it. I pulled the motor to have it rebuilt and I brought the radiator to the shop thinking of a presure test and a new paint. He said that the radiator would not make it. Showed me the radiator he replaced and the lower water way was bloated out ready to explode. The last owner must have use some kind of silicone stop leak. So I assume that the heater core might have the samething in it. I may not. Not sure. I should blow it out with water. There's no leak. So I think I can wait it out till it does give s me problem. Main concern now is to get the motor rebuilt and put back in and get it running. I want to drive it before the rain really starts. Been down since Aug. Waiting for the cam, lifters, springs, and the rockers to come in.Sure thake s the engine shop a long time. Thanks again guys. Tony
