Noob type question
OK,
for all you all out there with luggage racks.....
has anyone actually used them for luggage, or a duffle bag even?
I take the old boy on several long hauls each year, and with the tool box (so nothing does break), and bags and misc stuff, the storage area is so stuffed there is no room for t-tops...
Bought a left-over '77 new back in the day and it came with the factory luggage rack as well as the T-Top carriers and strap. It was a loaded L-48 with automatic and we took it on a number of trips. We carried a couple of medium sized suitcases many times with no difficulties. The only hassle was when you need to fill up, you have to remove the luggage. Fortunately that thing would get 21 mpg on the highway.
I also used the rack and T-Top carriers a number of times to stow the T-Tops on. It also worked like a charm.
I now have a '73 convertible and it has the luggage rack as well, but I have yet to carry anything on it.
luggage rack on a vette---same as putting a 1 barrel carb on a 454 for fuel economy...if you need to bring something on a trip, thats why you have a wife to drive the second vehiocle!!

I don't have one, but I think you put your bags behind the seats and your T-tops on the "luggage" rack.
I wouldn't put the t-tops on it but a small to medium duffle bag strapped down would be ok. Don't put anything inside the bag that is too valuable or will break if & when it flies off.
I've put a few things on the luggage rack. It's been handy on trips to the hardware store, and hey, a new lawn spreader... strap it on the rack and go home. The obvious problem with putting anything on the rack on a long trip is you'd have to remove it to put gas in the car.

Present day....No, I don't actually use the luggage rack.
But I clearly recall going CAMPING in our 69 Vert in 1980. No kids yet....we would strap a tent....stove...lanterns etc... on the rack and stuff the rest under the rear deck. We would go to Vogel State Park in N. Ga for 3 or 4 days at a time.
We're going to do a little bit of Route '66 next May. So I'm going to install a rack this winter and we found some good motorcycle luggage from Kuryakyn that will strap to the rack. We can put 2 small duffle bags for a weekend in the back compartment now but there isn't enough room for a weeks worth with the top down.
