I have a 78 Vette and my tach usually sticks at 2500 RPM. It will always "unstick", but sometimes takes a while. I can drive it one time and it won't work, then the next time it works just fine.
I have an Accel distributor, with MSD module inside. It has a 6AL box which fried, so I put the MSD module in the distributor.
I'm not sure if any of the mods are causing it or if it's a sticky tach, but hopefully someone can help.
When it works, it works just fine, all the way up to 5000 grand (I don't take it over that).
PM board member ACECO, he fixed the tach on my 79. Never met him at all, but I can say he is as honest as anyone I've ever dealt with and my tach now works fine.

I just wnet through some tach problems mine turned out to be the tach board...yours sounds like (Now I am not by any means an authority) but it seems to me I've heard that the dampining fluid inside the tach assembly can go dry this may be your problem.
