A friend of mine has a 78 coupe. he has had a bouncing speedo needle problem. he has replaced the gear in the transmission as well as putting in a new cable.
i looked on Corvette Centrals website for some kind of speedo head unit but there was nothing.
Any ideas what parts or service i can suggest to him to solve his problem

Wear safety glasses if you don't want to get back-spray in your eyes.
to quote my buddy.
we have lubricated and done all the normal things but the #%^*& thing still bounces. we are thinking to change out the head unit but i can find one on CC or Paragon websites.
Do you have cruise control? It could be the transducer is binding up
That's the first place I'd look. If you don't have cruise you may have to get into the speedometer head itself. Sometimes a drop of bearing or clock oil in the jewel in the frame and magnet assembly will take care of the problem, (since you've covered most of the other bases). If it were a 76 or earlier, I'd walk you through how to do it, but the 78 to 82s are a real nightmare once you start trying to dis-assemble them. If it's not the cruise transducer, have a speedometer shop take a look at it for you. Especially for those years.
