Need tach help
I'm working on a 78 vette the tach doesn't work but if I bypass the external capacitor it does work. is that capacitor used to smooth out current flow for a steady needle only or is it used for curcuit protection too? "will it hurt to leave it bypassed" as much info/help as possible would be very appreciated. thanks Jon

Mine worked without the "Tach Filter" that you are referring to for at least 25 years...just recently had to change the tach circuit board...I think there are 100's of opinions on this one...but yes the can is supposed to send spikes to ground protecting the Tach Circuit Board.
