Default Jumpy Tach - Electronic HEI distrib

All of a sudden, when I finally get my motor running/idling smoothly, the tach starts acting up!!!

At first I had NO TACH at all, but after resetting the TACH connector at HEI distributor, the tach runs but is jumpy .... around .5-1k with a smooth idling motor .....

Other than resetting the electronic connector behind dash, are there any other things I should check ?

P.S - Also have a MSD module, that has an additional "low voltage" green tach lead, that documentation indicates is 5v (vs 12v on one coming out of distrib) should I use that one instead?

Do you still have the tach filter on the distributor? It looks like the old points condensers did but is bolted to the intake below the distributor. The purpose is to prevent the problem you are describing. As far as the MSD goes I think they require a tack adapter to be used with some tachs. Check with them to be sure or you could call Summit tech line to find out. If you need the tach filter I think Zip has them for about $45.00. A lot of money for a condenser in my opinion. Good luck.

Check the grounds at the dash. You need a good solid connection for the tach signal.

Don't use the 5v signal. Stock tach, stock signal wire.

I am going to put the old stock tach filter back on as a test .... this one is one of the Ecklers replacements .... but my old one still works, just looks like crap and I had to solder one of the wires .....

Good tester though ..... I think I have already had ecklers replace it once .... guess it could be bad again!!!!

SORRY ECKLERS - It was a MADVET purchase!!!! Returning it and will get another one from somewhere else, as this was second one that didn't work right!
