I've noticed that the fender design allows all four tires to throw a lot of rocks and road stuff back on the car. I'm considering mud flaps to help with this, but the rear of the fender wells don't seem to provide a good place to secure them.

Anybody found a good set? How did you mount them? Any better suggestions?

Why do you want to drive your car in the mud???

 

When I bought my 73 in July, the previous owner had flaps on the car. I could see it if you have a long gravel driveway. I pitched them, didnt care for the look. He drilled two very small holes in each flap and right through the lip of the flair, yikes.

 

I was kind of wondering about flaps too. They would have to look like crap BUT, I have three ways to go from home to a paved road, and each of them is one and one-half miles of gravel, I usually crawl along at about 10mph.

 

I saw in one of the vendor catalogs where they have a set for C3's that clip onto the wheel well. Then if you want to remove them, just take off the clips.
They showed someone putting them on and driving the car to a show, then taking them off when they got to the show. I don't remember which catalog it was though. It might have been in one of the emails that Ecklers sends out.

 

Another option is the clear plastic protection from ZIP...

Yeah, screw holes or clips that use the narrow lip on the fender flares are a concern. If the flaps take a hit I' d think there's a chance they could do some damage. The clear plastic is a good idea, but it'd have to be a really large piece to cover all the area that's exposed to spray from the tires.

I was hoping that someone produced flaps that were molded to the shape of the fenders, like you see on a lot of newer cars and suv's. Even the C6 Z06 has moulded flaps that extend the outline of the fenders to handle the wider rear tires. They look ok, wish I could get a set like that for my C3.

I'm going to install a set of the flat, screw-on flaps to my rear fenders. While I wish someone made molded shields, I'll take a bit of weird looks in exchange for dirt, small rocks, road debris, etc. not tearing up my lower quarter panels.

 

most the paint is gone on my lower quarters from the lack of any shielding. in fact just yesterday i was scraping mud off my quarters all the way upto the bumpers, which had mud caked on the under side of them.

that was just from the drive up my driveway.

 

My lower rear quarters look like they've been sandblasted.

I install paint protection film for a living. you can get the rear 1/4s and doglegs done but there's not much point if it's already sandblasted.

 

Those look nice but will they stay on? I'd like a pair for my 68.

 

do what i did...go out and rip some huge burnouts until the entire wheel well and bottom half of the car behind the wheels are covered in a rhino liner-ish coating of tire rubber! works great for rock chips!
