How much do you think non original colors (exterior, interior, or both) affect value? My thinking has always been that non matching numbers engine, tranny etc would decrease the value more than colors not matching the trim tag. What do you think?
btw - i know the answer to this may depend on year and other factors. I'm asking the question because i found a nice '69 vert...mostly orginal except for colors.
The more original the car, the more the color matters. If you have a SB car with a BB and a blower through the hood then paint color is not as big a factor. If you have a pretty stock car with wrong paint-but done well-and that is what you want, I would not worry too much about it. Buy and enjoy it. Just realize that you may decrease your sales pool when you go to sell it. How much is probably somewhat year and area dependent. I think exterior color is probably a bigger factor than interior.
Non-original colors will effect the value by the cost to return the car to the original colors. But this only applies to collector cars.
Nonoriginal cars (all new drive trains), hot rods, customs, etc: does not matter, in fact may increase value, just depends upon what the buyer is wanting.
IMO, unless the car is an all orignal survivor car or close to it, I would say quality of the paint is more important to the value than correctness of the color. I.e. good paint in a non-original color, but still correct for that model year, is more important/valuable than having bad paint in the original color.
