I bought a 76 project car for 3K here in GA. I bought it with a Bill of Sale which is all you need in GA for a car this old. My question is, how does one get a title for a car with only a Bill of Sale?
I registered the car here in GA and asked if I could get a title for the car. I was told that it was not originally registered with a title from the previous owner and that I couldn't get a replacement title.
Any help would be appreciated. My thoughts are that the value of the car may be deminished without a title.
If the State won't give you a title, then what is the problem? As long as they recognize that you are the legal owner there is no problem.
If you later move to a state that requires titles (like Missouri, which just keeps making the title rules even on ancient vehicles more stringent...bastiches), that state has to issue a title from the proper paperwork from the non-title state. If the title state gives you grief about it, they're in violation of the US Constitution. Little thing called "Full Faith and Credit." Most of the time it isn't an issue - they take a look at your proper paperwork from the non-title state, look it up and see that it is a non-title state, and issue the new title.
If it was registered in Georgia without a title, I don't think they will give you one. That is what they told me at the Dalton, Ga DMV. Then again you know how folks at the DMV are . Do a google search for Broadway Title, might help you out.
You may try for a lost title as if it was always yours or in the family forever. Normally an inspection is necessary. Once completed {inspection} take it to the Sec of State and tell them it was lost or you cant find any paper work after setting for several years. These applications are normally right in the Sec of States office. It shouldn't`t show up in any files they have and should be granted.
I just sold my Hemi Cuda the same way. I told them I lost the title and had a Judge friend call one of his cops into court and he signed the inspection without even seeing the Cuda. In fact it was already in Arizona and couldn't`t be inspected in my State.
Ohio DMV's are very tough on Georgia titles generally anyway. i understand that certain counties in Ga. have titles for sale as a way to make money. IE cars without titles are easy to get ones for, Ohio DMV told me they would not accept a Georgia title for most cars. Doesn't sound right to me but that is what I was told by the Clerk of Courts.
Check to see if the Registration state "Transferable" or "Non-Transferable". If it states "Transferable" then the registarion is the title or ownership. Here in NY I believe all pre-1972 is "Transferable" or no offical Title.
