Default Dyeing Interior Back to Original Color

My 70 interior was originally bright blue, but has now been dyed to black.

I want to dye the dash pad, console and door panels back to bright blue (I'll get new carpet, windshield moldings and seat covers.

Should I remove the old black dye, and if so,how and with what?

If I leave the black and dye the blue over it, will I lose some of the grain of the vinyl since it will have been dyed twice? And how should I prep it if this is the way to go?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you have a decent car I'd just get replacement pieces as a dye job is not something a future buyer wants to see. Plus there is no telling if you do re-dye it how well it will adhere. Sometimes it sticks OK and sometimes not. The dash would probably be fine as it gets no handling but the console and seats and door panels get touched a lot. You don't want the hassle of it flaking off and then you wind up sanding ect to get it smooth with the rest of the peice before you hit it with dye again to blend it back in. If you want to strip off the black you could try laquer thinner or lightly sand it off.

I am very curious to see which way you go here... this decision may also be in my future.

I totally agree with that statement.

For the seats I would definitely buy new covers.

It's the dash, console and door panels I am not sure what to do with.

Big price difference on buying new vs. dyeing.

I think you would probably do fine on the dash, and even the console. I would worry about the doors it would see a lot of wear. The dye does work fairly well just use several light coats and you will be amazed how well it turns out. You can also start with an interior dye primer if you are worried about going from black to bright blue.

I am working on a speaker box for my rear speakers and I am covering it with black vinyl that is very similar to the seat covers. I did a test dye to switch it to Pace Car Silver and did not use a primer and it turned out perfect.

i have dued interiors in the past with mixed results. its really just vinyl paint as it does not soak into the material and scrapes off. it also wears off in any high contact areas. if you are going to keep the car for along time, shell out the bucks and do it right it will be painful short term but everytime you look at it you will know that it was done right. my 0.02.

now when it comes to dyeing seat belts, this really does work with very nice reslts. i dyed gold seat belts black with dye from the grocery store (the kind that you boil the water with) and they came out great good luck.
