Default Educate me...

I should have titled that educate me part 1 (of thousands...).

I'm waiting for the weekend so i can completely strip the frame, so i have some other unrelated questions while i wait.

Question 1: engine and bellhousing. This motor is non-original (so i was told, i probably wouldnt know the difference). and i noticed that the bellhousing didn't match up at this top most bolt (pic below). any reasons? i assume it doesnt matter...car ran anyway, until i became involved anyway!

Question 2: Fuel Lines. Ok, on the passenger side there are two fuel lines (one fatter than the other). These lines terminate at the engine on the ?? whatever it is where it then branches up to the carb (remember i need some vocabulary help). So my first thought was fuel return when i notice that on the driver side there is another line running to the fuel tank. So what are these lines?

wait, I'm not done yet. The line on the driver side, as best as i can tell, was hooked up to the "coffee can" looking thing on the inside of the driver side fender, under the washer fluid reservoir.

this "coffee thingy," it would appear, had not been hooked up to anything for some time, and the line running back to the gas tank is the only thing i can logically assume it once belonged to? there was also a rubber hose coiled and tied to this as well, it went god knows where...so

Question 3: what is the coffee can thing and how does it relate to the line on the driver side that runs back to the fuel tank, and how do those things relate to the 2 fuel lines on the passenger side

thanks for the help in understanding this all, guys/gals

The line on the driver's side is the vapor line, and the coffee can is the vapor canister that feeds the vapors into the air intake to be burnt.

These get disconnected a lot. The can can be removed from under the car when you take off that splash shield just behind the wheel well. Three bolts in the wheel well, and two on the side under the rocker panel.

If it's not hurting anything just leave it. If you want to return it to stock, just make sure it's connected to that driver side frame rail and that that is in turn connected to the nipple on the tank.

IF the nipple on the fuel tank is blocked, make sure you are using a vented gas cap, as you only use a sealed one when the vapor system is intact and functioning.

your bellhousing location and fit is normal. your fuel line(fat one) and fuel return line(skinny one) are connected to your fuel pump. Then your fuel line goes to the carb.

1. Engine and bellhousing fit is no biggie, they are multifit units intended for multiple combinations of motors and transmissions
2. 2 fuel lines on the passenger side, the big one is the supply from the tank to the fuel pump, the smaller one is the return line from the pump to the tank, thats part of the emissions, improved starting system.
3. The coffee can is the fuel evaporation canister, it collects fuel vapor from the fuel tank, carb and air cleaner. The vapors are then run thru the carb to be burned. Like DB says lots of them get deleted as "Performance Improvements" this is usually a mistake. The canister is your friend, does not affect performance good or bad, uses no horse power at all provided you have no leaks in the hoses. What it WILL do is keep gas fumes from smelling up the garage and save some ozone if your a tree hugger.

Your fun is just getting started good. Looks like the other posters have your questions covered for now. You'll learn alot around here, just keep asking questions, stay patient, and it'll all come together. I remember the "no turning back now" feeling I got once my body was off.

excellent - ya'll are awesome. most of my assumptions about those parts were correct, then (though i didnt know about the charcoal/fume canister system or which was return and which was supply). I'm at that junction where i'm actually trying to apply some of the the knowledge i think i have gained via this site and i just want to be sure about things as i proceed. you know how it goes, talking about it is one thing, doing it is another.

you guys are giants, and i'm standing on your shoulders.

In the picture the nipple on the left is the gas tank side, the hose goes to vac source. What year is this thing? You will need a good vac diagram to get everything hooked up correctly
