Default Energy Absorber

This is a private message I sent Twin_Turbo...I want to get more input from the rest of the forum.

"Your enersorber has collapsed because the car was hit in the back. You can press them apart again, I've done it too. Just check if the friction collar still has enough friction, otherwise get new ones. They are what saves you from rear frame damage."

I just read this post in the archives. I was told by someone on the forum to put my enersorbers in a hydraulic press to see if they sprung back up after they were compressed...if they did it meant that they were alright to put back on the car. So I put them in my hydraulic press until they started to collapse and then releived the pressure on the hydraulic bottle jack...only one of the two impact absorbers popped back up to its original position. Do I need to replace the absorber which didn't pop back up...or can I just decompress it and reuse it? If I don't need to replace it, how do I pull it back apart again?

Post your comments.

i believe i was the one who posted the info about putting it in a press. if it doesn't spring back then it is no good and needs to be replaced. if you pull it back apart to its original length and then get hit in the rear again it will not have any absorbtion in it and will collapse prematurally thus being useless to prevent frame damage
