I can't beleive I've let you guys talk me into rebuilding my stock engine - its not official yet, its still a toss up. I've heard that building the stock engine to get the power out of it that I want will take just as much money (if not more) as buying a powerful crate motor from GM. Now you guys are making me go crazy again

I have been lurking in the back ground during this entire thread and you are killing me. I have two 18-year-old daughters (twins) and it’s all I can do to get them off the couch. You make me want to kick them in the butt. I hope you parents are proud of you!!

Tried the 0.026 shim again as I didn't have it a snug fit the last time I did it.

Pinion Shim :
0.026
Drag: 17-18 in/lbs
Left Shims: 0.041
Right Shims: 0.038
Backlash: 0.005-0.008

Yeah, differentials suck don't they

At first look, they seem cool, but then they start to drive you crazy

A message from the two experts on differentials - Gary and Mike.

Gary
"That looks pretty good. Mist a little WD40 on the gears and put your yoke tool in the LH side and spin the gears a few times to get a wet pattern. That should clean up the smudge spots on the teeth."

Mike
"You're not going to get much better than that. Now install one of the stub axles (no snap ring) and rotate the carrier about ten times in each direction. You should see the patterns even up."

It looks like I am almost done this differential - just a few last minute details (fitting the side yokes, installing the needle bearings, installing the pinion seal with permatex sealant, installing the side yoke seals and filling her up with additive/oil and doing a leak test). I built a differential at home off the internet

Installed the two new pinion bearings (the final good ones) and set the drag to 18-19 in/lbs. Did another pattern (still haven't installed the preload shims), and the fu*ker went deep in one area (couple of teeth). The backlash is lowest 0.006 and highest 0.0085. I'm not sure of what to do now - the majority of the teeth look good...so this may be the best I'll be able to get it. I'll wait too hear back from GTR1999 and tracdogg.

Simply awesome! I've been reading your thread for a while, and it's really getting me motivated to start on my '69. Wish I had your skills though! I'm 'mechanically inclined' as they say, and know a bit about cars, but it's my first attempt at a resto as well, and it makes me nervous! Would love to have a look at your progress someday...I'm in town. Have fun, and keep those pics coming!!

I tune in occasionally and you are doing a great job! I would highly suggest the ZZ383 as it is simply a bolt in, with some carb. mods. An LS motor will require a computer, and a lot of messing with the way you bolt up all the accessories. If you rebuild and don't change the heads with compression over 10 to 1 then you might be mixing fuel as I do, to keep from knocking. 450 ft lbs of torque from 2,000 rpm to 6,500 in the 383 will get you in plenty trouble.

This is the last pattern I think - Gary and Mike just need to give me the okay, but everything is installed now and all I have left to do are the minor details (still have to fit side yokes, install socket cap screws, clean off the marking compound...)

pinion drag - 16-18.5
backlash - 0.006-0.008

Mike just gave me the okay - I am done the gear patterning...all I need to do is some minor touches, like fitting the side yokes, cleaning off the gear paste...cleaning the bearing cap threads, and then I am done this diff
