I am considering purchasing a 1972 War Bonnett Yellow convertible. It has the orginal 350 w/ auto trans, ps, pb, ac, pl and pw. The car has about 85k on it and appears to be in good condition. The price is 26k. I was hoping to get opinions of:
#1 Does this sound like a fair price?
#2 I have never actually seen a War Bonnet yellow vette (except in
pictures). How does that color look on a vette?
#3 Are there anything I nned to watch for with a 72 as described.
This is my first vette purchase and I want to make it a good one.
If I know how to attach the pictures I have on my desk top I would...but.
A lot depends on the condition. A decent car that has been well kept or some resto work could definitly be worth that. A 72 in poor condition, might look good but mechanically needs work should not go for that. You might find bad fame birdcage rot brakes need rebuild, trailing arm/rear wheel bearings need rebuild. All this could add up to a lot of $$$. See if you can find out what if any work has been done to the car. If you can have someone who knows C3 Vettes go along or maybe even hire someone. Even if it cost you some $$$ to hire someone it could save you thousands in the long run.
my last vet,a 70 bb vert i had painted red. that was 20 years ago. wasnt original color but my 72 is war b. yellow. if its a nice paint job you will love color. ive seen all 72 colors and i like em all but wby is my favorite.
Warbonnet Yellow rules!!
I worked in an office in my high school years and out the window sat a roadster with a 454 and I loved it. I ended up with a '70 Elkhart Green roadster for a while but a (gold) War Bonnet Yellow roadster is still my favorite.

At $26K the car should be just about flawless in and out and mechanically. It should have been frame off restored very recently and need nothing. That is all the money for a 72 small block.
War Bonnet Yellow is a great looking color although it is more of a gold than a yellow as you can see in the previous photos.

Gordonm,
I am thinking of hiring a company called Classic Car Guy to do an inspection. They are out of California, but say they have inspectors in the area of the car (Ohio). Ever hear of them? Here is their website. Thanks, John

I have not heard of them but that sure does not mean they are good or bad. You might want to ask around at some local car clubs if they know of someone or a Vette club and you can be more specific. You need someone with an unbiased opinion.

You have Elkhart Green confused with Donnybrooke Green which was the color used in 70...Elkhart was used only in 72 & 73

Red70vette,
Thanks for the info.
Here is a link to a few pictures. What do you think?
John, Great color, nice list of equipment and looks like a nice car. You really need to have someone that you trust that knows C3's inspect the car for you. From the pictures it looks like the hood was either not shut or the fit was poor also the passenger side headlight door. I noticed from the engine picture that the valve covers are on the wrong side. The real concern is frame rot and rust in the bird cage, which you can't see from the pictures. Best of luck and hope this works out for you.
I think Mershons usually has very nice clean cars and there hasn't been any feedback about them on this Forum one way or the other. I agree with others that for 26K it should be a very nice car. Just looked at all the pictures, it looks like a very well detailed car and only 2 owner. It even still has the original radio....doesn't get much better that that. But do the usual stuff like frame rust and birdcage issues.
The company I hired to do the inspection say they will spent at least 2 hours on the actual inspection and specialize in this era of car. The inspection report is at least 12 pages (over 150 inspection points) and includes an lengthy test drive and additional pictures to include putting the car on a jack and getting better pictures of the under carriage (I specifically requested this). The inspector is suppose to be a recognized corvette expert (not sure who deemed him/her that, but they were recommended to me by a friend that used them to inspect his vette).
Swampmarine,
Is the car here in KC? If so I would go to look at it for you. I don’t think the price sounds bad. From the pics it looks NICE and from my experience 25000 gets a vert that needs some work. Some will disagree but I looked for a long time and that’s a fact of life on the chrome bumpers.
