Maybe in the Tech section? For a '71 I think anything 2 1/2" and stainless would work just fine. For a car with no emissions and full duals, exhaust isn't a big deal.
Making the transition from a C5 to a '71, I'm not seeing much talk about exhaust system preferences. Am I missing something?
Most exhaust for C5 cars are already made up. They make mostly bolt on systems. The C3 systems are pretty much custom made. You pick your mufflers and go have a good system bent up for it. There have been quite a few discussions on mufflers here.
If you're going non-stock and don't have emissions, Hooker headers and sidepipes are a great way to get more "chrome" on your car. Just trash the Hooker mufflers (inside pipe dia. too small.)

What is there to replace those mufflers with?Is there anything readily available? I had thought about cutting them to make them smaller and then re-welding the caps.

The Max Flows (by Hooker) out flow open pipes. Sound is deeper than Thunders, which are a bit tinny for my tastes, or even glass packs. Noise levels apparently aren't much different than glass packs, that is, until you get on the loud pedal. I'm going to try a set behind my BB.
You can go 2 routes. Order a stock system from one of the vendors, or go to a muffler shop and have them custom bent with either stock manifolds or headers. Muffler selection is pretty broad depending on flow and decibles you want. General consenus is you loose some HP with side pipes, but you have a larger cool factor.

No you're not missing anything. Most of us have exhaust on our list. It's just that, with 35 year-old cars, the list is quite long. I have wanted to get rid of my rusty exhaust for a couple of years. Next year might be the one.....

The hooker glass pack mufflers had a 1 5/8 dia pipe. They were fairly quiet but hurt performance by choking the motor. I bought 2 1/8 dia oval "Cherry Bomb" glass packs and welded a home made funnel shaped inet on them. Have them on for 2 years now. Motor runs great and the pipes are getting louder all the time.
