Default Side Exhaust Insulation

I have previously posted on Side Exhaust Insulations. I was hoping to get more detailed information and hopefully pics before I lower the body on Friday.

I bought 2 different insulations:
Item A= large rectangular (38.75" x 8.5") foil/fiberglass
Item B = small die-a small cut black foam.

For Item A, the picture in Paragon looks like a hard foam piece like the really fat black foam body insulators. Even the AIM page J418 is the same and looks nothing like Item A

Where, how and WHEN do these get installed.

Last - the Item A that I described looks like seriously antiquated technology. Upon finding out how it is installed - I may purchase another better insulation. I have to order asap - so appreciate your fast input

hmmm - well is your picture of hooker headers? What area should I be looking at in the picture? The AIM sketch is of OEM side covers, but I do not see the insulation material. Unless you are referring to item 6, the insulator. Thanks for the help - I hope I am not overlooking something

I thought from your description that you were talking about the insulator to the bolt on the frame. Apparently not. Now I'm not sure what you are looking for.

First - I appreciate your attempts to help. I did use teh word insultOR by accident - apologize.

I am actually surprised no one else has tuned in... See above in bold. There is a large rectangular (38.75" x 8.5") foil/fiberglass that I am talking about . If you look at teh AIM (your page does not show it) - that will give you a hint. I will try to post ths weekend for posterity, as unfortuantely I MUST order something today/tomorrow and overnite it for body lwoering on weekend.

SOMEONE PLEASE CHIME IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the Item A is mounted between the frame rail and the body beneath the door threshold to stop heat from migrating into the cabin. I can tell you that there's plenty of heat from the sidepipes in this area. Item B plugs the opening at the back of the frame rail "kickup" area to prevent heat from venting/entering near the floor/pan area (blocks air movement vs item A which is designed to slow heat migration). Believe you must separate the body from the frame to install Item A.

Thanks Fred - I agree on the area to install Item A - but the AIM shows it 'folded' and it even looks like 'foam' (like the pipe insulation for outdoors.??) With the questions I have, I figured I would just lower the body and then assess - will keep you aprised. Will follow your advise on Item B and learn.

I have a 69 factory sidepipe car, with "N14" written on the rear bulkhead behind the passenger seat with the job #, and it has a fiberglass insulation with a heavy foil backing sloppily stuffed in the location described by Hammerhead Fred above. I assume that it was put in by the factory after the body was set down on the frame. It is not a foam type insulation or anything folded. The foil side appears to be towards the outside of the car with the fiberglass against the frame rail. About an inch or 2 of it hangs out from under the body side rail when the insulators are off.

And that would make sense with the foil facing the heat source to reflect it back out away from the interior compartment. Nice description.
