Default heater box gasket

i need to replace my heater core, and i was wondering if i need to buy a new gasket. i can't believe a gasket kit costs almost as much as a heater core! can the old one be reused? i figured if it's made out of cork, then i could make one myself if i need to.

I'm about to do the same job. I just recieved a new heater core this week via UPS from Paragon. I hope to start disassembly this weekend so I can have look in the box. I'll be in Richmond on Tuesday so I can hit ZIP's if need be for gaskets. If I get far enough into it this weekend to evaluate seals I let you know.

I will not make it to the seals this weekend for evaluation. I just spent the better part of 9 hours disassembling the interior to replace the heater core. The reason it took so long is that when mine bit the dust it evidently had been puking coolant behind the carpet and foil insulation, and now I have the full front interior out. There was 3/8's of an inch of coolant in the passanger floor under the carpet, what a mess! I've been eyeballing an Al Knock carpet set, guess I'm getting one for Christmas now.

The good news is that the bird cage and floor look great, no rust. Since everything is out now I want to re-dye all of the gauge and console pieces and maybe update the stereo.
