I read of individuals looking and sometimes finding tank stickers and I have never know what they look like. specifically for a 68 Vette. I did find a orange colored tag with exactly what the Vette was or is as far as the engine and components listed that the car has. It also listed the clutch, carb numbers, crankshaft, and cylinder heads plus a few other items I cant remember. It was in one of the three rear compartments behind the seats. Is this a so called tank sticker?
Tank sticker is really a build sheet. Chevrolet would stick a copy on top of the gas tank as the frame went down the line. It will list all the options and dealer as well. I managed to get mine off in pretty good condition.
First year of Tank Stickers/Build Sheets was 67. Have been there since (or at least somewhere in later cars but on the tank from 67-82 or later.
They are ussually either missing or in bad shape. On or around 71/72 and even other years they have been found in other locations including behind the dash, behind door panels, under seats, under consoles, etc.
Reproductions are available. If you have one that is legiable but fragile you can get a new one duplicated. Nice to stick in the window at car shows or to read in the can.
Below is a pic of the one off my 72LT1's tank. I later found one in perfect condition between the speedo and tach behind the dash.

I would say its neither a tank sticker or build sheet and until 1973 they were different production documents. Prior to 1973, what's called a tank sticker is a copy of the Corvette Order form. A build sheet is another document and not many have been recovered from 68-72 Corvettes.
Beginning in 1973, the build sheet was glued to the tank and therefore they became one in the same from 1973 through 1982. They continue to use them today and the national corvette museum sells them for Corvettes built in Bowling Green from 1981 through 08.
Having said all that...I'm curious what document (tag) you have...can you take a photo and post or send?
Do all the years have tank stickers? or just the early model C3s?
This article on C3 build sheets was published a couple of years ago but still quite current and answers many of the questions you may have on build sheets. I've updated it and should be coming out in Corvette Enthusiast in the next year.
I can take a picture and send it to you. From descriptions your correct it may not be build sheet. What about a engine tag specifically for engines as it does in detail describe the complete engine components and it`s more of a tag rather than a sheet. .

Nope, it is an actual sticker that was placed on the gas tank from the factory. Very hard to get to, and if your tank has been replaced for some reason, guess what, that sticker is lost forever!
