When I bring in a 1980 Vette from the US into Ontario do I have do replace the speedometer to metric or can I get away with the imperial because of the year of the vehicle. Likewise with the daytime running lights I believe these are also exempt.
A 1980 does not have to go thru the "RIV" program.
"The program regulates passenger cars, trucks, vans, jeeps, chassis cabs, trailers, motorcycles, off-road vehicles and snowmobiles less than 15 years old and buses manufactured after January 1, 1971"
I was considering the U.S. import option when I first looked at Vettes.
It wasn't real clear if being exempt from the RIV program made you exempt from the Federal inspection.
I fired off an email to the RIV guys.
This is the response:
Dear Sir,
All vehicles (except buses) that are over 15 years or older by the date of manufacture
are exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles program.
You must be able to prove the age of the vehicle to a Customs officer.
Therefore you do not need to meet the Federal inspection's requirements.
You will be issued a Form 1 - Vehicle Import Form at CBSA (Canada Border Service Agency)
and they will double stamp your Form 1 showing the vehicle is exempt from our program.
Please contact CBSA for more information on importing your vehicle and for all applicable taxes.
Their telephone number is 1-800-461-9999 (within Canada) or 204-983-3500 (outside of Canada).
Sincerely,

shmoky
it was meant as a guide line for people that need info on importing cars!!!!!!!!!!
I suggest that you have a notarized bill of sale. You will have to pay GST at the border based on the sale price. Keep the GST receipt as the Ontario Ministry of Transport will want it for the PST when you get a safety certificate and wish to purchase plates.
