So, I live in California which means I have to deal with the ridiculous smog laws here which is driving me crazy. Sure I can undo everything once every two years and get a smog check but that is making me nuts.
If I was to post a trade add up somewhere to trade my 77 for a 75 or older model year do you think anyone would jump on that or would I be better off just selling the 77 that I have now and buying a different one? In the trade, I would expect to get a car that is not in as good as shape as mine obviously.
maybe just wait a few years. How old does it have to be to be exempt?
Unfortunetely it will never be exempt in Cali. Only cars 75 and older are exempt. We used to have a rolling year limit here but that was done away with in 2004 which just sucks.
i'm in the same boat, it does suck. i think there's alot you can do though and aside from the exhaust most of the smog equipment does not really affect power. I'm going to shoot for about 350hp with full smog equipment except for exhaust, then just swap exhaust every two years when i need to smog, not too bad if i can keep it all bolt in.

Yea, that is what I have been doing since '98, I am just getting a little tired of it, hahahahaha. Plus, I am at the point now where I want to put some fuel injection on and I think all the aftermarket kits are smog illegal (why when it makes the car more efficient I don't know) and I don't wanna have to swap all that out every two years.
I'd sell it on Ebay. Post '75 cars are kinda worthless here in the golden state, but in many parts of the country it makes no difference. Then buy yourself a pre '76 and be done with it.

That is definetely starting to sound like the best option. Its so hard to part with the car I have had since I was 16.
Here in AZ you have to smog any car or truck that is 1967 or newer. Only '66 and older vehicles are exempt, so my '67 Pickup, my son's '70 Mustang and eventually my '69 Vette all require smog testing in our state.
The only way around it is if you register it as a classic and get classic car ins. (car must be 25 yrs. old). That is what I'll do with the Vette, but my son drives his Mustang every day so he couldn't qualify for classic ins.

My sister actually lives in Oklahoma and apparently nothing has to be smogged out there. Maybe I should just register the vette in Oklahoma, hahahahahahaha.
In all honesty, what do they really look for at a Cali Smog check? An AIR pump hooked up properly and a cat? Would they really notice fuel injection if I got a TBI style one as long as I had everything else hooked up?
