Speedometer driven gear in tranny
I have been having problems with my speedometer needle bouncing around once I hit 30 mph or so. I ruled out the cruise control, speedometer cables (both), and am now checking the driven gear where the speedo cable connects to the tranny. 1980 305cid is what I'm working with. After I finally got the speedo cable disconnected I did not see any colored gear with teeth. All tha's there is is a small hole that the end of the cable goes into and the threads that the sheath actually screws on to.. I was just wondering where the actual driven gear should be and how to remove it, so I can check and/or replace it.

The speedometer cable is attached to the driven gear housing on the trans. There is a bolt holding the housing retainer....remove the bolt and the retainer, then pull the housing out....the gear is attached and slides off. (Be prepared for some fluid leakage).
