I'm paranoid about being rear-ended and was wondering if anyone knew of an aftermarket third brake light for C3s. If there aren't any I can fab one up.
ive seen the tail lights that flash really fast when the brakes are first applied and then they go solid. the quick flashed really get your attention even if you arent looking in the direction you should be. on the other hand i wonder if it could cause someone to have a seizure
The reason the government came up with the upper-center brake light requirement back in the 80's, aka the third brake light, is because crash research suggested that a driver's focus and attention to the car ahead of them is in that area, not where the tail lights are traditionally mounted. Next time you are out driving and are behind someone else, think about where you are focusing...it will be on the passenger cabin/rear window area of the car, not down low where the lights are. The research suggests that because of of the higher and centered mounting location, a driver could/would take notice and react faster to a brake light in this location than they would if it were down low. With the corvette's small dim 2 outboard tail lights, I would think that this could do nothing but help. I am in the process of installing a rear wing on mine and plan to put a led strip in it in addtion to the led lights that I hooked up. All four light up on braking and the outer two on each side blink.

it was developed for visibility as stated above.
i believe 99% of drivers are looking through the vehicle in front of them
to try and anticipate what their next move will be, cars stopping in front
or weaving to go around an object in the road.
this is a cool 73.. when you chg'ed to the four bubble tail lights why didn't chg to four brake lights? I think four brakes lights would let all know your stopping.....
