I have taken out my DELCO starter to get it tested (car was not turning over) and IF it needs more than a solenoid, I have been looking at these "mini starters".
Are these directly compatable with existing wiring, and how much space/weight do they save you? It wasn't very hard to get it off the car and I am just curious what a mini-starter would gain me if I do ever replace my full size delco?
Also, should I have a heat shield for starter? I don't have one now and never had a problem (unless I have one now )
You don't need a mini starter. If your current starter has been giving you years of service, just buy a new one. A mini starter helps a motor with higher compression, turn over easier. As long as you have a stock motor, keep it stock, all your wiring will line up. Just make sure you put the shims back the same way, if there were some.
No shims but modified engine: AFR180 heads, edelbrock intake, Comp Cam .... but until recently, the starter worked just fine .... but only 1 large & 1 small post on the solenoid were used (there are 2 large & 2 small posts on solenoid)... wondering if I was hooked up correctly ....
Tested starter at parts store, it kicks out and spins ....... Will get it back installed tomorrow .... So I guess I have a wiring or battery issue
since I have enough power to run all the accessories, lights etc, but nothing to the starter????
It is a fairly new battery, but will put charger on it just for grins .... and I always use the quick-disconnect when I leave it sit for more than a couple days .... guess I should also put 2amp trickle on it, to keep it fresh.
is there any test I can do AT STARTER with a DMM to see if I am getting correct voltages to the starter??
Put your meter or test light on the S term at the starter and have someone turn the key to start.Make sure you have 12 volts there. If you dont and you probably dont then look at the 4-6 wire connector at the back of passenger head and just below the alarm hood switch, then check neutral safety switch.Your checking the 12 gage purple wires for voltage-thats what kicks your satrter solenoid.
I got starter back in, got the harness cleaned up nicely and routed correctly .... tightened up all the contacts, went through gears to make sure the neutral switch was not culprit, quick-connected back my battery and WHALLAA - wrooom wrooom ..... and I think I FINALLY got all my leaks fixed, but not holding my breath until leak free for 24+ hours
