I'm putting plans together to build a dream shop I have always wanted. I want plenty of room to restore 1-2 cars and store a few cars about 6. Planning on a roomy work area and tool storage. Does anyone have a rule of thumb about how many square feet you need to restore a car. Should I desiganate areas for special items and procedures (a good layout). Want to start off with a good size so I do not have to add later. All the builders I have spoken with ask, what size do you want, I'm lost.
On a lift, do I want one you drive on or one that lifts by the frame?
For painting do I need another building?
Hoping to hear from someone who has been through this, and learn from their mistakes.
with the gents above. You can NEVER build anything in life big enough. Garages, houses, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. Make it as big as you can afford, and then a little bigger.
While my 2 car garage will never compare, I can offer some suggestions based on a guys garage I've been to many times, a "Garage Mahal". His has heat and A/C. He has separate areas for working on cars and separate for storing. I don't know the exact dimensions, but it's somehwere in the neighborhood of 50x50. 1 bay door has a separate "hallway" leading ot the center of hte garage which is the working area. In an L shape on 2 sides around the outside is the vehicle storage, with many more bay doors. I believe he stores about 10 vehciles. The "hallway" has a lift that you drive on and of course can drive through to the center of the garage which is the working area. He doesn't have any painting area, becuase he doesn't do that. I would suggest though, a closet or even better, put your air compressor outside to keep the noise down, even with a quiet 2 stage, less noise is better.
