Default rear wheel "play"

For the early years, when the car is jacked up on the frame should there be any movement in the rear wheel when pushing and pulling on the top and bottom of the tire? I didn't think so. The entire assembly the wheel mounts to seems to move with the tire. Movement only with the pressure on the top, not the bottom of the tire. The bottom seems to remain stationary while the top moves.

Sounds like the trailing arm bushings, and/or, the wheel bearings are bad or loose. The bottom of the wheel assembly is held rather firmly by the struts, shocks, and rear spring bolt assemblies. Just a guess.

end play for the rear wheel bearings is recomended at 0.003in, max at 0.008in. i.e. less then 1/100 in max. wheel bearings.

It did not appear to be the bearings since the whole wheel assembly moved along with the movement of the tire at 12:6.

I guess I need a good resource for understanding the rear end.

If the trailing arm moved when you rocked it, you either have a bad u-joint or bad strut rod bushings.

gccch, This is fairly common condition. It is most probably your rear stub axels worn. If the wheel only moves up and down as you describe, take a closer look at the axle. It probably has some play in it allowing the whole half shaft to move up pushing the stub axle in. Stub axles can be so bad as to wear past the c clip that holds them in place and drop it into the differential housing.

Is this why sometimes you will see the rear wheels leaning into the car? I guess it should not be driven any distance until it is checked out closely, right?

You have to inspect the whole rear suspension. If you are not familar with these cars you will be by reading up on them on these forums. You may have play from more then one source or bad work. are the strut rods bent? are the bushings dried out? how much endplay do the axles have into the diff?

OK, I see I have a lot to learn. When I get the car on lifts again, which may be a while I'll post more detail. Until then I'll keep watching for similar issues.
Thanks,

I think I gave you a link to my pictorials. Look them over they have a lot of pictures on the rear suspension.

Yup, check to see if the stub axels move in and out of the diff when moving the wheel.

If you are buying the car from an unknowing seller, you could make a big deal out of it. In reality, if this is the problem, it is a relatively simple repair.
