Default L88 engine code question....

OK, I was calculating the dates from the engines pictured on the recent "engine stamp picture" thread by Sixpack. I was getting a feel for how much time was usually between the assy stamp and the VIN date.

On pictures #15 and #16, I saw the engines with suffix "IT." I was checking the dates, and noticed the engine numbers were 1969. (VIN derivative started with "19".)

Thing is, when I look up IT suffix in the Black Book, it only lists IT for 1968 L88 motors. I see other suffixes for 1969 L88s, but no IT. Was there an IT L88 suffix in 1969?

Yes, there was an "IT" broadcast code used during 1969 in addition to 1967-1968. It was used on all early 1969 L-88s equipped with closed chamber (aluminum) heads, first design camshaft, and vacuum secondary Holley carburetor. These first design L-88 engines were used from the start of 1969 production up until approximately May 1969.

The Black Book is certainly a handy quick reference for basic questions, but I would hardly consider it a definitive source of Corvette information... Especially when you're looking at some of the more esoteric Corvette data.
