I've got the papers. They are excellent. But, I think I passed the level that he went into in the papers. I could be wrong, but I read 3 papers and all associated diagrams for the C3, standard column. I'm down to the last step, and the pics show the column disassembled, but I don't know how to get the last couple of pieces apart. It almost looks like they were pressed together.
The lower half of the column is rusted quite a bit, and I want to bead blast and refinish it. Plus the upper parts of the column need to be refinished.
Joe, is there any chance you could post a pic so's we could all see where you're at? I've had the column completely apart on mine, but mine's a T/T in a '76, I'm sure there's differences.

The only thing unique about the 1969 through 1976 Vette standard column is that the Shroud is held in place by screws into the jacket. Also there is a Shift Bowl Cover that prevents you from seeing the Shift Bowl as it rotates when you shift into Reverse. I think that the Shift Bowl Cover is attached to the Shroud with some screws (or one screw) as well. The service manuals don't seem to address this "Corvette only" feature.
Also, on the standard steering columns the shift tube should be a slip fit into the shift bowl. The shift bowl should be trapped between the Thrust Cup that is part of the Turn Signal Housing and the Gear Shift Housing Lower Bearing that is inserted into the Jacket Assembly. So unless there is some corrosion that is preventing the shift bowl from sliding off of the end of the shift tube, I am not sure as to the extent of your problem.
These are the instructions from the 1971 Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual.
You have reached the point where you have removed the Turn Signal Housing from the jacket.
---------------------------------
STEERING 9-17
10. Remove the gearshift lever housing and shroud from the jacket assembly (transmission control lock tube housing and shroud on floor shift models.)
Corvette - If either the shroud or housing cover are damaged, remove the retaining screw and slide the cover off the shroud.
----------------------------------
There are no other special instructions for the Corvette column.
On standard steering columns the shift tube should be a slip fit into the gearshift lever housing. (On tilt columns the shift tube is a press fit and requires two special tools to remove and reinstall it.)
