I had one on a '71 Cuda that backfired during tuning, burnt 2 holes straight through the element right over the primaries. No fire, though, just melted foam rubber.
I have never had a problem with the car backfiring and if the worst thing was a melted piece of foam I can live with it but IS there a similiar size (height) air cleaner that I could replace it with? I'm having trouble finding one shallow enough for hood clearance
There's a number of low profile or drop base air cleaners on the market. Once you decide how much drop you want you can change the air filter element to various heights to suit.
Regarding the Edelbrock or any open top element type air cleaner...all are subject to causing problems should you have a backfire. Besides melting the filter foam, it can burn any underhood insulation or scorch the underhood paint. While technically there's nothing wrong with that style air cleaner, they're best left to street rods with no hoods.
I caught one on fire (flames could be seen thru the hood scoop on my Cutlass ). The element melted into the carb and I spent the next 1/2 hour cleaning the carb out before the next round of racing. The was the last time I've ran that type of filter.
