In 1978 my dad owned a boat dealership and I worked for him after school doing fiberglass work. I sat in my first corvette then. I wished I owned it, I had a 69 Ford truck at the time. A girl had brought one in for us to fix and it was a brand new pace car and all the paint was scraped off the top of the hood and fenders. Seemed it was her boyfriends car and he worked offshore. She had driven the car back to their house (trailer) and left it running outside while she went inside for something. She came back out and the car had idled up under the house trailer to the windshield pillars.
She got us to fix it before he got home, luckily it was so new the black just blended in, looked like new when we were done. I guess she got away with it, didnt read about a murder or anything. I remember she was scared to death, cute too!
I bought this car a couple of months ago in another town and my dad came over to my house on Christmas eve and looked at it. I had been stripping the front half of the car and I had said something about the owner saying it was original paint on the car and how that was BS, I had cut through another layer on the hood and fenders. Dad then reminded me about that car she had brought in and wanted to check it, I told him I doubted it but what the heck. He took the VIN and we went to his house Christmas day and he had pulled all his old business records out in his office and found the original work order with the VIN on it. Same car, guess wishes can come true!! it took almost 30 years though!! Bet the girl isnt as cute after thirty years, but then again neither am I.
What I understand from the story is that she left the car idling, and it must have gone into gear ( auto or manual?). It then rolled into the trailer, or rather under the trailer up to the windshield. My guess is that it is a manual, and she left it in neutral, and it rolled on its own. In that case it did not matter if it was running or not. But if it was off, then you would naturally put it in gear. If it was running, you put it in neutral. She should have used the parking brake. Thats my guess.
its an auto, that was the story the girl told my dad anyway. Maybe she left in drive? I dont know. I remember she was a blonde.... but it did a number on the high parts of the car. I thought when I first saw it that it been driven under a tractor trailer or something because of the scratches, the glass wasnt hurt and it didnt break the windshield which leads me to believe it must have idled and stopped when it met some resistance. It kind of freaked me out when dad pulled that old invoice out. Mom was pissed because he had all his old records out of the boxes on Christmas when everyone was coming over. My father still has his dealer license and is going to run the title and see if it comes up with the same name. I know I didnt buy it from him (original owner) because I'm the 3rd owner. The other guy bought it 3 years ago to restore it and never did. Its pretty ragged right now, like about a 40 footer. Frame and all is very clean. It has a lot potential. Still looks good to me though and I am several thousand into it now. Gets better everyday.
Cool story. You never know about the girl either, she could be one of the ones that got better looking over time. Since no one else has said it, when do we get to see pics?
