Default Performance muffled 69 style sidepipes?

I am changing from Hookers to 69 style, but I don't want the restrictive stock sidepipes. A bit loud is OK, but not like open pipes.

Yes I have done a search on this topic.

Where should I buy these?

Are you trying to fit them under the stock style covers? Planning to keep the supercomp headers?

I am going to use stock style fiberglass covers.

The supercomps will have to go. I am going to do an LS engine, probably with shorty headers leading into the sides.

Sweet Thunder fabricates factory look-alike sidepipe mufflers. You get your choice of tubbing size. They can duplicate the sidepipe mufflers in pipe sizes as large as 2 1/4 inches (maybe its 2 1/2 inches). I think the factory sidepipes were less than 2 inches in diameter. These should have a lot less HP loss. Also, since they make the sidepipe mufflers, I imagine they make them as free flowing as you want. They have a web site, so have a look.

I read somewhere that the factory sidepipe exhaust caused a 200 HP loss on a engine being run on a dyno.

Do you know if they have a web site? This would be of interest for me as well.

EDIT: I found it. The hyphen fooled me:

Don't know why, but this made me laugh. I was thinking that if I put these on my old 81 that I would have negative HP. Presumably they started with more than 190 HP.

While I hadn't heard that the HP loss was 200, I have heard that they were very restrictive. More than any other aftermarket muffler.

HAHAHA
I thought of my 78 for a moment. I dont think that it is putting out 190 HP.

I had a set of original corvette side pipe mufflers on my 78 for awhile - they have 2" inlets and actually get smaller as they enter the muffler - (just looking in the inlet opening) I dont have any real proof but I think my single exhaust makes more power.

Doesnt sound nearly as good though.

If you are worried about HP loss, then dont even think about having a factory style side pipes! .. I've tried both the stock muffler size and the over sized offered by sweet thunder, both caused a significant loss of engine's HP. I can estimate that to be more than %25 of original under body exhaust system. I think its possible to hide a hooker side pipes under the stock glass fiber covers and still preserve some engine's HPs.

There is a forum member who fabricated 3" pipes to fit under stock GM '69 covers. I know that thread is archived, I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks for those threads Batman, looks like I won't have to reinvent the wheel when I get ready to do sidepipes! I really like the looks of the stock 69 covers, and it is great to see a solution that allows headers and the stock look.
