Hi Guy's, is the POR - 15 brand the closest to factory color you know of? Or it just a rust killer.

Yes, the Eastwood kit is pretty good - that's what I use. Be warned though, powder coating is a disease! You'll actually go HUNTING for things to powder coat. I did my distributor and wiper motor yesterday

So basically..hows it work?? I went to their website and saw a gun for $99, but the "system" started around $700!! I am sure you need more than just the gun???

$99 gets you a hobby gun, which is all you'd need to get started and then buy the powder colours that you want. $700 gets you a pro gun and a load of other stuff that you don't necessarily need.

Real simply, powder coat is powdered plastic. The gun is attached to a power box and there's also a ground lead. You put the ground lead on your piece then spray the powder at it. As the powder comes out of the gun, it picks up a static charge (can't remember if pos or neg) then it is attracted to your piece and "sticks" there. Then you put it in the over and bake it.

I was thinking of getting the deluxe gun kit at $139.99. How much can you paint with a 1/2 lb container of paint? Does they come with instruction?

You'd do a fair bit with 1/2lb of powder, probably 4 or 5 largish items like alternator, power steering pump, master cylinder etc. Just a guess though. And yes, they come with basic instructions but there's plenty of help available...

No where near factory. Comes in semi gloss or gloss. POR is one of the best rust preventive coatings out there. I topcoated my POR painted frame with Chassis Black to resemble original.

i used a pneumatic grinder w/ wire wheel, laquer thinner and ALOT of scotch brite, and also about 12 hours prepping the engine bay. Then all i sed in tremclad semigloss black(or rustoleum) and i turned out much better than i expected. Cheap too, only cost me about 5 bucks for a pint(x2) and 7 bucks for laquer thinner(x2) bringing a grand total of about 25 bucks. What do you think?

Looks good. Was the paint brushed on or sprayed?

Various methods to get the old ones out. I burned mine, others have used a hole saw... I think if I ever had to do it again, I'd run the A arms and trailing arms down to a local NAPA and have the old ones pressed out and the new polys pressed in. Save SO MUCH time and its easy to "deform" the ends of the TA and A arms where the bushings go, especially if you use a BFH to knock out the old ones. You can use the time cleaning, etc...Overall not a tuff job to do, just can be nasty, esp if you burn out the old ones..Also, lubricate the polys WELL or they will squeak...forget what I used but I'll research it...

The lube is Formula Five, made by Energy Suspensions...got it at Napa...
