I took a couple of weeks off this year to finish off the underbody on my car. New springs, sway bars, body mounts, shocks, headers, new stainless steel exhaust, etc. I got the body mounts on, the guts ripped out of the rear (since I got this off, why dont I replace this ....) is killing me. The bottom end of my car is scattered all over the shop. Every u joint is frozen, I broke my China harbor freight 12 ton press, trying to get them out, had to result to the good ole trusty cutting torch. I dont have any skin left on my knuckles... My wife was telling me how grease stained my hands were at church this morning. Now I am eyeing my differential... it looks like it needs some spit and polish and a little TLC, I think I can take it! Looks like it needs rebuilding.... Does it ever end? How do you stop yourself from going deeper and deeper? On top of that, my wife thinks it would be a good time for me to repaint the kids bathroom and replace the boards on the deck.
It does not end until you have done a total resto on everything. Take some time every now and then and do the honey do list. It will keep peace in the house plus it will give you and your hands a break, and your wallet. Keep us posted on your progress and show some pictures.
keep the wife and kids happy first! THEN if your that motivated DONT stop whyle you have the time! theres no telling what you could get done with an attitude like that
Looks like the yoke seals have been leaking for quite a while judging by the 'protective coating' they have left on the lower part of the cover. I'm in the process of cleaning and painting my diff and half shafts right now. I would really like to get the diff rebuilt with different gearing but I decided to put that off until after the car is on the road again.
If your diff isn't making any noise you might get away with replacing the yoke seals and u-joints for now. Take the opportunity to blast or clean all the parts and repaint before reassembly.
My 78 started out like that. I was only going to do a little clean up. Next the interior was out. Then I wanted to replace the body mounts. Before you knew it I was down to the frame. Going that far I said, might as will repaint the frame. Thats how my frame off full blown, fully restored 78 started.
