Default Frozen Battery

I got a battery tender for christmas. I went out today to hook it up and discovered that my battery is dead as dead gets. I'm pretty sure its frozen. Can I save it by warming it up, or is it JUNK? Tim

If it is frozen, don't boost it!! They can blow.

The best thing to go with a new Battery Tender is a new battery. It's piece of mind too.

Thanks for the advice, This car isn't going anywhere until spring so I'm not in a hurry to get it running.

That sounds backwards to me.

No problem, then don't buy a new battery. Mine was 5 years old, and was starting to lose the charge. I got a tender, and it would keep the battery charged, but if left un-tended it would drain. I bought a new battery, and have had it tended during periods when the car is not being driven. The battery still holds 13V after week of no charging and no tending, and with the tending it should last that way for a very long time.

"The best thing to go with a new battery is a battery tender."

Does that now make sense?

No, because in my mind a new battery is always better than an old used one. So I still stand by that statement. No one HAS to go buy a new battery, but can you or anyone say that your old used battery is better than a new one?

You even get a new warranty with a new battery.

Why do cars still have batteries anyway? You would think by 2008 it would just be a capacitor or something.

Because Mr Fusion has not been invented yet.

You can't start a car with a bad battery. You can, however, live your entire life successfully without owning a battery tender.

Very true, but no one said anyone had to buy a battery tender either.

If your battery is frozen; yes, it probably is junk! A battery with a good to excellent charge will not freeze. I have left fully charged batteries in my boat, disconnected for the winter (-5 to -10 degrees F). A frozen battery would tell me it's time to replace.

If you wish to prolong the life of your new battery, DB is correct. A battery tender used properly will extend the life of any battery. Not necessary; but yes, does offer benefits. The advantage of using a battery tender is that it can be left connected to the battery, for extended periods without concern of damage to the battery.

We've had capacitors for right around 100 years now. They charge instantly and there is no chemical reaction process like with a battery so they don't wear out. MIT was doing some research into a honeycomb-style capacitor which could store as much energy as a battery of the same size.

Capacitors drain down over time, though. If they can solve that problem, they'd be the perfect automotive solution.

You do not need to discard a frozen battery........Simply take it out and thaw it before attempting anything. The fastest way is to fill a sink or tub with hot water and set it in there until fully thawed. Once thawed you can charge it, use it, etc.

With the progress made in lithium-Ion batteries, wouldn't there be an application for cars?
