Default Found a great alternative to stock jack.

Other than triple A. WalMart sells a GM Goodrich scissor jack that is pretty close to original. It's about 1/2" to long, but will fit when raised a little or just put your lug wrench under it to make up the difference. I just can see paying $100+ for an original jack that is rusty and date coded. This jack sells for $16.

I'm sure there are some junkyard jacks that will work. Maybe someone will chime in with some alternates.

I found that there is a Jeep Grand Cherokee bottle jack that fit very well. The lifting piston has a threaded center shaft for extra high lifting and for extending up to the frame before lifting. I'm thinking of having a bigger foot welded to it, and having a better cup attached to the top. Then I remember that I removed my spare a LONG time ago, and would have no need to jack this thing up in most cases outside of my garage.

You mean something that looks like this?

I haven't attempted to remove it.

Thanks budman, I was starting to look around for replacement jacks, but all I found was the $100 or $250 ones.

Oh and just to be clear, I have another jack in the car.

I have a quart of naval jelly, but I'm afraid it might disappear.

Has anybody come across another jack that will fit back there?

Shed some lbs and clean up the rear. Dump the jack, spare and carrier. Harbor Freight has a small 12v air pump for 10 bucks for emergencies

I found a small hydraulic bottle jack in the clearance tools at ACE Hardware a few months ago. I think it will be perfect for those extremely rare roadside lifts, and it's smaller than the original scissor jack.

I don't have a clue.

Are there any side effects to storing the bottle jacks on their sides?

There are plenty of other GM jacks that have the same proportions as the Corvette C3 scissor jacks. I went to the GM junkyard and they literally had a pile of 100's of jacks for $5 each that looked very similar to the Corvette jack.

As far as a bottle jack, I would be hesitant to store anything designed to sit upright that had a reservoir of fluid built into it on its side. If it used some type of hygroscopic fluid similar to brakefluid, it could cause problems if it leaked out through the seals or the control valve(s) into the compartment area and softened the fiberglass or ran out the bung hole in the compartment and blew up under the back of the car going down the road.

PS A plastic dish like tupperware or something works great in the storage areas to both store items and protect from things like leaks. Makes clean up a breeze as well as reduces the noise from anything banging around.
